🌶 HG LOVESICK: TOPIC 3 PART 2 - THE DARKSIDE OF DEVOTION
Okay yesterday we talked about the chemicals behind chemistry but what happens when the butterflies in your stomach turn to knots and nerves turn to paranoia? What happens when your brain, low on serotonin, has to register betrayal by the person you fell for??? It can get messy...
.
Dopamine, the same hormone that is released if you do cocaine, is responsible for the surge in feeling after you feel attraction. The reason that wanting to be around someone feels very similar to going through withdrawal is because of dopamine and it’s ability to liken your love to addiction.
.
Oxytocin, the hormone behind the feel-good feelings that come out of intimate social interactions OR drugs like MDMA, helps us feel attached to our loved ones. However, oxytocin is also responsible for unreasonable attachments that create things like ethnocentrism and xenophobia.
Oxytocin (unnaturally prejudiced bonds) and dopamine (unhealthy emotional dependence) can be a super scary double edged sword.
.
Aside from you your hormones making you crazy, did you know that sexual arousal can turn off the part of your brain that regulates self awareness, critical thinking, and rational thinking? In short, lust (or love rather) makes us dumb.
.
So the good news is if love ever made you crazy it’s not totally your fault and it isn’t all in your head.
