Absolutely thrilled to be apart of The Self Portrait exhibition opening at HOME @home_by_ronanmckenzie in collaboration with @wepresent from may 13th to June 27th .

My image titled “Watching stars without you ” is inspired by one scene from Baz Luhrmann’ Romeo + Juliet.
In this scene the night has fallen, and fireworks explode across the sky, we see Juliet  in an angel costume on the balcony of the Capulet mansion, wistfully watching the firecrackers explode while Des’ree sings in the background.
Also watching the fireworks is Romeo, dressed as a medieval knight, just a moment before meeting the love of his life.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been drawn to romance and  its ability to allow me  to escape and explore  human emotions. Films like Romeo + Juliet shaped my aesthetic and this constant longing and idealisation of love in both my work and personal life, but as I grew older, I realised that nearly every love interest in films that I loved and shaped so much of my vision never included girls and women that looked like me.

As an image maker  I’ve always felt called to  forge my own path and create more of what I wanted to see in the world, with this project I wanted to make room for myself to shine, explore  love, be vulnerable  and perhaps  be my  own Juliet.

Thank you @ronanksm for selecting me and creating the most beautiful space for all of us to shine .

And a special thank you to my sisters @laicreates and @masentle for working on this with me and carrying me through every little insecurity .
