Neuroscience shows that trauma changes the brain and body's biology.

Neurofeedback is one of the promising, evidence-based therapies that can help address the underlying biological changes that result from trauma and PTSD. It helps those struggling from a hyper-aroused state to reach a calmer level so they can feel safer and react appropriately to everyday occurrences. Trauma takes away a person's sense of safety and stability at a deep, core level and activates the amygdala.

The amygdala is part of the limbic system, a part of the brain that processes and activates appropriate fear-related behaviours in response to threatening stimuli. During a traumatic event, the amygdala alerts the hypothalamus, this part of thee brain produces hormones like cortisol. Additionally, when threatened the autonomic nervous system will go into fight or flight mode, changing the body's biology.
Symptoms of flight or fight mode include:
- Increased heart rate
- Increased blood pressure
- Sweating
- Shallow breathing
- Skin becomes pale
- Unclear thinking.

Even after the threat is gone, the amygdala can hold onto the physical memory of trauma, therefore your body may experience fight or flight mode behaviours over and over again, leaving an individual with higher levels of cortisol symptoms and hyperarousal. Neurofeedback therapy is a treatment that is needed to help heal the brain and body's biology and encourage a healthier brain function through brainwave training.

Neurofeedback has proven to be more effective than medications in treating post-traumatic stress disorder because this therapy treats symptoms in the long-term, rather than temporarily masking them.
