Memory Of Cheslie Kryst
Memory Of Cheslie Kryst

One of the questions @realniasanchez and I answered during our IG live session today is a common one: how do I afford to compete in a pageant while on a budget? Competing can be expensive, especially if you compete more than once. We talked about a ton of strategies/solutions. One of the things I mentioned was learning to borrow from friends and rewear pieces I already owned. In fact, when I won the title of Miss North Carolina USA 2019, I was wearing the same green velvet gown I'd worn when I competed the year before. Also, I wore the same swimsuit all three times I competed at NC USA and wore clothes I already had in my closet for my interview my final year. I know that a lot of women who aspire to compete are experiencing financial strain right now and have to prioritize spending. Powering through this difficult time is what is most important right now. We are going to get through this. Once we do, if this is your dream, I hope you know that having an expensive new wardrobe each year is not required in order to win. Check out the full discussion in the video on the Miss USA Facebook page. ❤️

Innovative (ˈinəˌvādiv): featuring new methods; original and creative in thinking; advanced.
        .

My generation isn't the FIRST innovative one (yeah, I know I said first but you get like three seconds to think on your feet and 30 seconds to talk in front of millions of people 🤷🏾‍♀️).
        .

We are living in an era of innovation. When forced away from our offices and schools, we moved our meetings and classes online. Sweat sessions in gyms turned to home workouts guided by YouTube videos. What could've been isolation turned to unity through video calls with friends and tuning into live chats on social media.
        .

I'm currently living in New York City, the epicenter of the COVID-19 breakout in the US. Reports of hospitals and healthcare workers becoming overwhelmed and running low on supplies and death and infection numbers rapidly increasing are, candidly, pretty terrifying. What gives me the most anxiety is the uncertainty of now—not knowing how long we must endure and what our lives will look like once we emerge.
        .

This is what gives me hope: 1. Seeing the kindness of others, like the note posted beside the elevator bank in the lobby of my building. It went from a few volunteers to a page full of helping hands (I scratched out the apt #s). 2. Being inspired by the leaders among us racing to make a difference. Like @csiriano going from making jaw-dropping red carpet gowns to making face masks for healthcare professionals in dire need.
        .

Each of us can do something to help and all of us have a responsibility to figure out what that is. You can encourage friends and family to practice social distancing while practicing it yourself. You can donate to organizations that are aiding our communities, like Feeding America. You can offer a word of support to the isolated, like seniors living in homes that have restricted visitation.
        .

We are innovative. All of us. Be creative and figure out how you can help. The world needs it. . . needs YOU. #UniverseUnited

Six years ago I was competing in my third local pageant of the 2014 season. I’d lost the first two, but heard this particular competition would be crowning three women at once. I figured I’d have a better chance at winning this time.
          .
I had no clue what I was doing. I wore a swimsuit I bought from Victoria’s Secret. I sewed rhinestones on the top to make it look more flashy. I was overwhelmingly nervous in my interview, hence the giant sweat stains in my dress. I was pre-Invisalign so I still had a gap in my teeth that I didn’t like. I wish I had more women like @_queenchandler then to demonstrate that gaps are beautiful on pageant girls too. I thought wearing a tuxedo with coattails would be a unique outfit to wear for my piano piece. Idea: cool. Execution: not so cool. I wore a velvet dress from my mom’s closet for the evening gown competition (which I would wear again today in a heartbeat, btw). .
Six years ago I dreamed of representing my state as Miss North Carolina. I don’t know if it occurred to me that one day I would represent my country on an international stage and make history alongside four other women of color. I just knew I had a dream and I was sometimes afraid to tell people about it for fear of failing or looking stupid or embarrassing myself if I lost. I’m glad I tried, though. .
I won that night. A lot of wins and losses followed, but Miss USA 2019 is proud that little 2014 Cheslie tried. ❤️ #fbf #flashbackfriday #MissUSA #pageantjourney @chesliekryst
