    Many of you have heard this story, the one about a judge telling me to wear a skirt instead of pants. Few of you know the rest of the story—that the judge was actually a woman. .
    .
    Why is the judge’s gender a pertinent part of this story? Sexism in the workplace is not just about some men holding women back—although that is certainly part of the problem. It is also about the role some women play in perpetuating gender bias.
    .
    .
    Two of my favorite reads are “The Confidence Code” and “Lean In.” Both address how women can stunt our own growth at times by doing things like waiting longer than men to seek promotions and pay raises. Another one of my faves, “Pretty Powerful” by @ebonikwilliams , addresses how some women end up intentionally sabotaging others, worried about the scarcity of successful women and feeling the need to compete to be the token woman in a work setting or group.

    .
    In my case, a woman thought she was giving me helpful advice, a behind the scenes look at the psyche of male judges. In actuality she was furthering a sexist stereotype—that women wear skirts and men wear pants—while depriving me of the helpful substantive feedback the men in the competition received.
