🌶 Happy Monday and goodbye August! Question: how do you all feel about planners/journaling? I’ve gotten to the point where I schedule everything from “eat a snack” to “text him back” 😂
.
In all seriousness I spent today with my @passionplanner reflecting on August. Because I wrote so much down last month I was able to see what I intended to accomplish and what I actually did accomplish. Then I took a moment to look ahead at September and really make a plan to tackle some big goals AND have fun!
I used to “overbook” myself. I would convince myself I’d be able to study for 12 hours straight or see 4 friends in 3 days and no matter the outcome it would be a failure. See, it wasn’t that I couldn’t do it (study/be a socialite) but that if I did it, I would be so drained after that I’d need recovery time that I didn’t anticipate/plan for and it would set me back. And if I didn’t do it (study/be a socialite) I felt like I was letting myself down because I said I would. I was literally creating my own stress 😂
Now I use my planner to set reasonable goals and keep track of accomplishments. I write down what I want to do but also what I’ve already done and the day I did it. It helps me not forget how fucking great I am so that when I take time off I have zero regrets and zero guilt. I used to be avid journal-er when I was younger, now my planner serves as both my planner and my diary.
I keep track of my feelings, my plans, my accomplishments, my health, even the moon (full moon in Pisces tomorrow babies!)
I also use my planner to help me manage my time. I don’t know why but I have the most horrible concept of time. 3 hours feels like 30 minutes to me. Months feel like days. Time means nothing to me, so scheduling helps me not look up at 5pm and realize the only thing I’ve done all day is my nails 😂😂
What about you? Do you journal? Use a planner? Google calendar? Talk to me💛 @healthgeenie #QuarantineShot #WithJay

🌶 As La Rona continues to wreak havoc on our normalcy with no end in sight I find myself wondering what “old life” things I should start considering again. What is safe? What risks can I mitigate? How can I find routine and joy without putting myself and others at unreasonable risk?? HOW can I prioritize my own happiness, sanity, and health without being selfish to the greater community?!
    .
One thing Ive really missed in all this is the gym. It took me so long to become the kind of consistent gym/fitness person that I wanted to be and I FINALLY got there and then BOOM, P*ndemic. I belong to @equinox and my membership has been frozen since March. They recently reopened their doors with improved safety and cleanliness measures and while I didn’t considered it for the last two months I’m at the point where I need to either get rid of my membership or legitimately consider going back.
    .
Yesterday, after weeks of corporate emails trying to lure me back, I decided to visit the gym and check out the “new world” equinox for myself.
    .
I went on a Saturday. When you walk in they take your temperature and you have to sign a form that confirms you haven’t had symptoms or traveled. You have to have an appointment to be in the gym an you have to wear a mask EVERYWHERE except the pool and shower. The spa is closed, shared beauty products are not available, and their are signs everywhere remind you to give people 6-feet of space. Equinox has always been extremely clean (it’s one of the reasons why I like it, WSC smells like gym socks) but they’ve added way more disinfectant wipe stations and have increased their cleaning staff.
    .
I’m running out of room but what do you guys think? Are gyms in your p*ndemic future? Or are you sticking to prison work outs in your living room? Can you do cardio in a mask? Is the risk worth it? Talk to me💛 @healthgeenie #QuarantineShot #WithJay

🌶 I wrote a super long caption about the scam that “diet culture” is and the misconceptions about healthy food being synonymous with bad tasting and also where #wheatgrass falls in between those two subjects but I lost it and I am UPSET!!
So instead here are some pictures of my hands holding a wheatgrass shot without much info or context or story 😂
Swipe once for beauty benefits, swipe twice for health benefits.
      .
I’ll try to redo the caption but no promises on when.
Feel free to vote in the comments if you want the rant on diet culture, food, and my personal thoughts on wheatgrass.

🌶 Last week my best friend and I hit the road and headed south. If you’ve ever traveled with me you know I always leave the house like we’re leaving civilization. I pack food, water, snacks, and lotssss of wine (im 100% the person you want to get stranded somewhere with). This trip I was also hyper-concerned with keeping our health and immunity up because of La Rona and knowing we would be exposing ourselves to more public spaces (gas stations, restaurants, Airbnbs, new people). So I made and brought an anti-inflammatory immune support drink that we took in the morning out of green margarita glasses because life is party (or because I forgot to pack real cups).
Swipe for the recipe and a video of what our Airbnb mini fridge looked like!
When you travel, what do you pack or do to stay healthy?

🌶 Thinking about how the non-stop imagery of Black murder and suffering contributes to the overall dehumanization of the Black American experience.
          .
Remember when undercover videos and documentaries about industrial farming came out and people were sick to their stomach because they had no idea that farm animals were suffering that way? Remember how entire food and animal rights movements came out of those documentaries and images? Do you see how today there is a whole part of the food industry that is devoted to ethical, fair and kind farming practices?
          .
Compare that to the regular depiction of the Black experience as one of pure suffering. When you’re 5 they show you detailed drawings of Black Africans chained and stacked in the hulls of slave ships. When you’re a teenager they show you videos of Black Americans getting water hosed and attacked by dogs. They make you study Emmett Till and look at his little face, demonically destroyed and entirely unrecognizable all because a White woman lied and because White men got pleasure out of violently murdering a defenseless child. They showed you pictures of White Americans watching public lynchings with wide eager eyes like it was a new episode of Game of Thrones.
It has been years of the normalization of Black trauma and violence for profit, for punishment, for entertainment get to college and at this stage the only Black history the average Non-Black American has learned is the history of suffering, save for a few random examples of the guy who made peanut butter and the lady who did hair, an athlete here or there, and then those civil rights activist but oh they were violently murdered too.
          .
Whether intentional or not it’s not hard to imagine that non-Black Americans are extremely desensitized to Black suffering. They’ve seen it everyday. Black suffering is as normal in the American media as a storyline about a jock falling in love with a loser nerd who happens to be a total knock-out but he has no idea bc his jock brain couldnt see her beauty with her glasses, ponytail and brain in the way 🤪
          .
Today, try to remember that normalization does not mean normal.
